Why it feels so hard
Most business owners we meet aren't short of ideas. They're short of time. Social media gets squeezed in between looking after customers and everything else, so it's easy to post something in a rush, or nothing at all.
The good news is you don't need to be on your phone all day. You just need a few simple types of post you can come back to again and again.
1. Show what you do
Your product or service is the obvious place to start, and for good reason. A plate leaving the kitchen, a freshly finished room, a happy customer heading out the door. Keep it natural and let the work speak for itself.
2. Take people behind the scenes
People love seeing how things are made and who's making them. Opening up in the morning, prepping for a busy weekend, the team having a laugh. These are often the posts that get the most comments, and they're the easiest to take.
3. Introduce your people
People buy from people. A quick hello from someone on your team, what they do and their favourite part of the job builds trust faster than any advert.
4. Answer the questions you always get asked
Every business has them. Do you deliver? Are dogs welcome? How long does it take? Turn each one into a post. You'll spend less time answering the same message, and you'll be easier to find when people search for the answer.
5. Share what your customers say
A kind review, or a photo a customer has shared (with their permission), says more than you ever could about yourself. Share it, thank them and tag them.
6. Tell people what's coming up
A new menu, a seasonal offer, an event or a new product. Give everyone something to look forward to and a reason to come and see you.
How often should you post?
Little and often wins. Two or three good posts every week will do far more than ten at once and then a month of silence. Pick a number you can keep up and stick with it.
Make it easier on yourself
- Batch it. Take a handful of photos and videos in one go, then use them over the next few weeks.
- Map out your week. A simple plan means you're never stuck staring at a blank screen.
- Schedule ahead. Meta Business Suite lets you set up Instagram and Facebook posts in advance, for free.
- See what works. Once a month, look at which posts did best and do more of those.
